Members of the Larson Lab are passionate about the outdoors, parks and natural resource conservation. They are determined to address important research questions that advance understanding of the complex relationship between humans and the natural world. They are ambitious and driven. And they embrace a mentoring philosophy that emphasizes collaborative learning and problem solving. If that sounds like you, keep reading…

Research topics in our lab include, but are not limited to:

  • Human dimensions of natural resource management
  • Parks and protected area management
  • Community-based conservation
  • Environmental education and interpretation
  • Nature-based recreation, health, and well-being

We are eager to explore new territory as well, so if you have an innovative project idea we’d love to hear about it! Although funding cycles and opportunities are difficult to predict, we are constantly looking for talented and motivated individuals to join our team. Whether you are a graduate student interested in pursuing a research career or an undergraduate student looking to gain some valuable experience, we may have an opportunity for you.

As an added bonus, we work within a highly regarded park, recreation, and tourism management department in an outstanding College of Natural Resources at one of the top public research universities in the country. Located in the heart of Raleigh, a culturally vibrant and resource rich city within the rapidly growing Research Triangle Area of North Carolina, NC State is also a great place to live, work, and play.

If, after reading the message above and perusing the Lab website, you are interested in our work and are contemplating applying to the graduate program at NC State, please send Dr. Larson an email that includes a brief description of:

  1. Your past academic and professional experience
  2. Your primary research interests (which should align with the Lab’s)
  3. Your career goals

We would love to hear from you!

Be sure to check out the “Current Openings” links above for specific opportunities and application instructions.
