{"id":453,"date":"2017-06-08T10:34:50","date_gmt":"2017-06-08T14:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.textiles.ncsu.edu\/mpasquinelli\/?page_id=4"},"modified":"2025-08-18T01:07:05","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T01:07:05","slug":"research-interests","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/faculty.cnr.ncsu.edu\/melissapasquinelli\/","title":{"rendered":"The Laboratory of Multiscale Modeling from the Nanoscale"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus of our research is to develop and apply simulation techniques \u201cfrom the nanoscale\u201d to optimize the properties of soft materials, starting from the molecular building blocks (nanoscale, 10<sup>-9<\/sup> m) and working toward the microscopic (~10<sup>-6<\/sup> m) and macroscopic (&gt;&gt;10<sup>-6<\/sup> m) scales. These techniques enable us to predict how molecular <strong>structures<\/strong> and the <strong>dynamics<\/strong> of molecular systems relate to their <strong>functional roles<\/strong> (mechanical, protective, and toxicological).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We investigate how the structure, dynamics, and functional roles of molecular systems are affected by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Thermodynamics:<\/strong> temperature, pressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The local chemical environment<\/strong>: surface modifications, solvent, moisture, pH, or presence of other additives, dyes, or other species<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The physical environment:<\/strong> confinement, shearing, or presence of interfaces or voids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We address scientific problems in a variety of application areas, including: interfacial science, health and safety, and sustainability\/green chemistry.
