Funded opportunities for prospective graduate students

Graduate Research Area 1. Participatory video and engaged environmental justice research

This project aims to understand how concern for justice fits into natural disaster resilience.  The selected student will use participatory mapping and video methods to understand whether communities are able to define and create solutions to long-standing structural inequities as part of disaster recovery plans.  The strongest candidates will bring their own ideas to an emerging research project focused on long-term recovery from Hurricane Matthew in NC.  The selected student will show promise as a researcher able to communicate in academic channels and to work and live in a multiracial community.  Dr. Cutts will consider MS candidates with work or volunteer experience that indicates promise as a scholar and would be contribute to project goals. PhD-level applicants should have a MS in geography, sociology, community development, public health, Native American studies, parks, recreation and tourism management or a related field.  An emerging record of publication and promise as an interdisciplinary scholar are highly desired.

Graduate Research Area 2. Geospatial social networks of environmental governance

This project will contribute to the growing need to integrate geospatial and social network approach in order to understand how and why environmental governance transitions occur.  By examining changes in watershed governance following disasters, the selected student will  (1) quantify changes to watershed governance (2) evaluate the environmental justice implications of management outcomes and correlate them with governance systems, and (3) assess interactions introduced by disaster response and recovery change watershed governance practices. The selected student will show promise as a quantitative and interdisciplinary environmental social scientist.  PhD-level applicants should have a MS in geography, sociology, community development, public health, parks, recreation and tourism management or a related field and have coursework in social network analysis, geographic information science, or other quantitative statistical approaches that indicate promise in these areas.  Experience with environmental or disaster governance is desirable.  An emerging record of publication and promise as an interdisciplinary scholar are highly desired.
